This is a terrific large 5 hump Platybelodon Tooth or Molar. It is from one of the ancient elephants known as a "Shovel Tusker", because it's lower tusks are flat and close together, forming a shovel. Platybelodon actually means "Flat-Tusk". The tusks are thought to be used for digging and scraping soft plant material from swampy areas, but another theory suggests it may have stripped bark off trees to eat. Closer related to Gomphotheres, than Mastodons. This tooth is just beginning to have natural chewing wear. Marvelous complete Tooth, in fantastic shape. The tooth has been stabilized, and has no repairs or restorations. Actual Specimen Pictured & Guaranteed Authentic. This specimen cannot be shipped to Australia, due to Australian Legislation.
